Who Is Benefitting From This Stimulus Bill?

August 8th, 2009

by Jim Stanton

The stimulus bill passed a while back and some people are still under the impression that they are going to personally profit from it. Unless you are able to get a new job that comes directly out of the stimulus bill, the ordinary man on the street is going to see none of this money that is being thrown around so freely by the government.

The bureaucrats see these companies as being too big and too important to fail so we must all pay for their mistakes. If you have made a mistake, it is unlikely the government will bail you out. But if you are a big company, you get a free pass over and over. Obama inherited a big financial problem it is true. This would be a huge challenge for any President but one has to wonder whether he is just making the problem worse.

The amount of the stimulus bailouts is astoundingly high and those of us that have played by the rules are the ones having to foot the bill. It also seems that things might still get worse even with the stimulus package no matter what Obama does or doesnt do. This makes one wonder whether doing nothing at all would have been the right choice and letting things happen naturally.

What organizations are going to be the recipients of the Obama government grants that he and the government are giving out? Will these grants and stimulus money continue to go to the same colleges and organizations that have been getting them the past eight years or will new ones get them.

It seems that everyone is in line for some of this money except individuals who might really need it. Some people are getting assistance with lower mortgage payments but there doesnt seem to be many ways for the common person to benefit. People all over the country are hurting financially and it might be nice if they could get a piece of the handouts.

Do Players Even Want To Play For New York’s Unforgiving Fans

July 29th, 2009

by Bob Mecklindine

You would have a hard time finding fans that are more into their sports than New York basketball fans. These fans are widely known as being the toughest to please. They aren’t content unless their favorite New York team is playing for the top spot every single year. Ask someone like one of the famous players who has left about it. New York fans are really fanatical.

The Giants have had a nice run in the playoffs for the last several of years. The fans have plenty to cheer about. The questions surrounding Eli Manning have been answered. I just can’t understand what the fuss is about here. They’ve got a well coached team that always seems to be in the running come the playoffs.

Then New York fans have the lousy New York Jets. Jets fans have every reason to be angry at this football organization. The team let their best players go to other teams and then bring in a bunch of rookies. They bring coaching talent in but don’t keep them around long enough to develop anything positive. I guess the mindset around NFL team ownership doesn’t put much faith behind the term perseverance. If they did, you would see more teams building long term successful track records.

Another big time powder keg within the New York sports groups is the up and down New York Yankees. With that much money being poured out to collect baseballs best players it is easy to see why Yankee fans get fanatical after a poor season. There are increased expectations created when that much money is invested.

Then there is the other New York professional baseball team, the New York Mets. Mets fans are more of a hot dog and beer kind of fan. The Mets are more consistent than their Yankee counterparts. The fans know what to expect. They hope for a pennant but don’t expect one every stinking year. Even though fans are excitable there is far less complaining involved than compared to the Yankees.

The Rangers and the Islanders represent New York in the National Hockey League. For a New York sports team, neither one of those hockey clubs are consistently great. They have their up and down years just like any other team in hockey. If NHL hockey was as popular here as it is in Canada, I am certain you would see some really large budgets come out of both of those teams.

Half of the city are fans of the New York Knicks NBA team. The other half aren’t basketball fans at all. Most years they are above average compared to other NBA cities. I guess a reason for that is New York City’s ability to attract people to come live there. People, especially wealthy people, love to live in or near New York. There are so many awesome benefits to living here. One of those benefits is having controversial sports teams to cheer for in every major national sport.

Wasteful Government Spending

July 22nd, 2009

by James Ziebarth

Over the last eight years, our media has provided example after example of wasteful government spending. Of course, each example was blamed on Republicans. This year, few news reports are even mentioning wasteful government spending, even though the government has passed massive spending bills. Fiscal Year 2009’s spending report highlights multiple examples of wasteful government spending.

Hawaii and Guam are spending millions on controlling brown snakes. In Fiscal Year 2009, Representatives Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Representative Madeline Bordallo (D-Guam) requested $1.2 million. Representatives Hirono and Borallo requested the money to control brown snakes. Even more astonishing, similar requests were made each of the last 14 years. A total of $14.6 million has been used to control brown snakes.

The next Bill that smells like bacon, is one that House Appropriator Carolyn Kilpatrick ( D-Mich ), requested $50,000 for. This money is being used for tree replacement in River Rouge, MI. According to a census completed in 2000, this town had a population of less then 10,000 people. Could this money not have had a better use? How many trees do you get for $50,000? Does a town of less then 10,000 people really need this many trees. Why not start a community outreach program to keep kids off the streets and off of drugs. Education, in my opinion, is more important then a few thousand trees.

Military spending has been a source of contention. News media outlets regularly run stories about war spending. What they do not tell us is other places the government spends money on the military. After all, non-war spending does not meet their agenda. Senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), and Representative Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) requested $30,000,000 for Phase Five of an access road. The access road is being built at Pohakuloa Training Area. Keep in mind, this is Phase Five of an access road. The other four phases already cost $74.4 million.

Veterans benefits and military spending have received a large amount of attention. Our military veterans deserve the best benefits money can buy. This spending story has nothing to do with veterans benefits. It is about a request for money to build a dining hall. Representative Louise Slaughter joined then Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) in requesting $9 million to build a dining hall at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Swine farms give off voluminous amounts of odor. There is no disputing that. However, is this really a problem for the federal government. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) believes so. In fiscal year 2009, Senator Harkin requested $1,791,000 for swine odor research. The research will be into swine odor and ways to manage it and will be conducted in Ames, Iowa. Would you call this necessary or wasteful government spending?

Now I can call Bull when I see it. We seriously have to spend 1.8 million to find out why swine manure stinks? Thats ridiculous. Has anyone took the initiative to study the human feces to see if we excrete nutrients. If the time was taken to study this then they would more then likely determine that humans excrete nutrients in their feces as well. Also, as for odor control, we as humans, have invented the toilet. Why not spend this money on creating a sanitary way to not only dispose of the swine manure, but it would also act to control the odor. There is no reason to do a study on why manure has an odor. It always has and always will. Thats part of anatomy. Lets spend this money on something more important, like finding homes for all the children who are abandoned at birth and given up for adoption of just left out on the Hospitals doorstep.

Military branches are always researching new weapon systems. It is necessary to keep America the superpower that we are and protect our citizens. It is not surprising the Department of Defense is developing a new jet plane. The Joint Strike Fighter has been in development for several years. Congress decided that the current engine needed competition to make it cheaper. They alotted $465,000,000 to develop a second engine. There was nothing wrong with the current engine being tested. Congress just wanted more competition.

There were 435 Representatives and 100 Senators that refused to be identified with this massive waste of taxpayers dollars. Does that tell you something? If the elected officials that we have put in office are ashamed to be connected with an Earmarked Bill such as this, then it makes you wonder why the money was even appropriated for this nonsense. Do we really need to allot $465 million to build engines on a competition level?
